Family Portraits: When do you think about having one?

I was working out yesterday and while on the bike I was reading my Professional …Photographer’s Magazine. One of the articles bothered me. The author said that the only time most people think about family portraits is when some one is critically ill or dying. I thought this is kind of morbid. Shouldn’t portraits we hang in our house be a celebration of our lives not just remembrances of the people we lost? I wonder if this is a true assessment. When was the last time you had a family portrait

I had the privilege of shooting a social gathering at an upscale apartment complex called Camden Cotton Mills located in Charlotte, NC. This property is amazing. Their social area is a roof top deck with a club house, pool and an amazing view of the Charlotte skyline. Now I have shot several weddings from this site and I must tell you, the view never ceases to amaze me. The social was called Fire and Ice and they had a fire breather, which I have never seen in real life, ice sculpting’s and I set up a portrait studio in the club house and took both studio and candid shots. It was such an awesome event. One I don’t think the residences will ever forget.

I remember when I was a kid there was a mom in the neighborhood who everyone just loved. The kids would line up around the block to get to hang out at her house. She always had the best snacks, the coolest games and toys and when it came to calibrations she would always include the neighborhood. She was just a cool mom. I think just about every neighborhood has a cool mom like this or should. Maybe she was your mom or maybe she is you. Even with the ever increasing hustle and bustle of managing work and family the cool mom always finds time to remember why she is doing what she is doing. She steps back and seems to love creating memories for all those who are lucky enough to be part of her life.

Well this weekend I was just lucky enough to be invited to just such a cool mom’s Easter Egg Hunt. Erin has been putting on this event for the last 4 years. I asked her why she started doing this, even though when she began she didn’t even have kids. She said that it all started because she wanted to do something fun for her nephews and niece. “It has gotten a lot bigger obviously and we have incorporated all sorts of stuff!” Erin says.

I was just lucky enough to be part of the stuff she was talking about. This is my second year doing this and I just love it. The spring colors really jump out at you when you see the photos that I was able to take. I hope Erin and the other moms in the neighborhood like the results.

Thank you Erin for allowing me the opportunity to participate. I hope I get to do this again next year!!

We had so much fun this morning taking Hunter’s 3 moth photo session. The weather was so nice this morning that we decided to take the photo session out side and let nature be our canvas.

MJ’s Walking!

Our Family Photo’s motto is that there are significant moments in everyone’s life that deserve to be captured. This statement came to life over the weekend when one of my clients called me very excited and told me that her baby started walking that day and that she wanted to capture this moment with professional images. This got me thinking about how blessed I am to be able to witness some of life’s most precious events.

Now I certainly don’t remember when I took my first steps and I don’t have any photos to show me, but I think I can still relate. I think we all can. Remember when you finally got your driver’s license. The world seemed to open up to me. The possibilities and the adventures that awaited me were so exciting. No longer was I dependent on others to get around. I was independent.

I think that is what MJ was feeling. He didn’t need to be carried all the time, and let’s face it crawling isn’t that much fun and you really can’t get that far.

I think I captured his excitement in our session. He is such a happy go lucky little guy. Soon we won’t be able to call him a baby, but at least his parents have this most precious of mile stones captured forever.

When was the last time you took time to capture a mile stone on camera? Maybe now is the time to gather the family together and make time to have your portrait made. Spring is just starting to poke its head out and it’s a great time to have that family portrait you were always saying you needed to do.
